The practical driving test in Belgium
Home › The practical driving test in Belgium
The practical test is the final step before your full licence. It takes place on public roads with an examiner, who assesses whether you can drive safely on your own. Well prepared, you pass first time; poorly prepared, it costs a new fee and weeks of waiting. Here is how the test works.
Key points
After theory and provisional licence
You need a passed theory test (valid 3 years) and a valid provisional licence.
Manoeuvres and traffic
The test combines checks, manoeuvres and driving in real traffic.
Fees from €41 to €51
The fee depends on the region: €41 in Wallonia, €46 in Brussels, €51 in Flanders.
Before the test: documents and vehicle
- Your ID card and a valid provisional licence.
- If learning with a private instructor (guide): your guide and a compliant vehicle with insurance, registration, roadworthiness certificate, L plate and an extra interior mirror for the examiner.
- With a driving school, the dual-control car is provided by the school.
- Arrive early: being late or missing a document can cost you the fee.
How the test runs
The test starts with a few vehicle checks (lights, tyres, fluid levels) and simple questions. Then come manoeuvres (parking, turning around, hill start…) and driving in traffic in varied situations: built-up areas, junctions, roundabouts, fast roads. The examiner may ask you to follow a route or signs independently.
The examiner assesses everything: observation, blind-spot checks, priority and speed, road position, anticipation and smoothness.
| Region | Practical test |
|---|---|
| Wallonia | €41 |
| Brussels | €46 |
| Flanders | €51 |
Mistakes that fail the test
- Running a red light, not stopping at a stop sign, failing to give way.
- Not giving way to a pedestrian on a zebra crossing.
- Speeding or driving too fast for the conditions.
- Not checking the blind spot before turning or changing lanes.
- Forcing the examiner to intervene to avoid danger.

Tips to pass first time
During your last lessons, drive as if it were the test: checks said out loud, unfamiliar routes, varied traffic. Review the theory too: priority, roundabouts and zone 30 remain the situations where most failing mistakes happen.
On the day, take your time: a slow, controlled manoeuvre is not penalised, a rushed one often is. For the full route to a licence, see getting a driving licence in Belgium and the provisional licence.
Practise this topic with real exam questions
Reading a rule is not enough: in the Belgian theory exam every question is asked on a photo of a real traffic situation, with answers that look deliberately alike. On PermisBelges, every topic of the highway code is practised with questions in the GOCA exam format, each one corrected and explained.
A free account gives access to the lessons, the free mock exams and progress tracking. Premium unlocks every exam simulation, detailed statistics per topic and targeted revision of your mistakes until exam day.
