Lesson objectives

Understand the mandatory frequency of technical inspection and the vehicles concerned Know the documents to present and the penalties for non-compliance Identify the legal and financial consequences of failure to undergo technical inspection

Technical inspection: a legal obligation

Technical inspection is a mandatory inspection of your vehicle's technical condition. It ensures that your car complies with the safety and emission standards in force in Belgium. This inspection must be carried out regularly for all vehicles subject to this requirement.

Technical inspection certificate

Official document certifying that your vehicle has successfully passed the mandatory technical inspection. It must be on board the vehicle during any police check.

When must you undergo technical inspection?

For a private car, the general scheme is as follows: first inspection four years after first registration, then every year . Additional occasional inspections are added, the most well-known being the pre-sale inspection to a private individual. The inspection certificate issued following the inspection is part of the documents that must be presented during a police check, just like the driving licence, identity card, registration certificate and insurance certificate.

Mandatory documents on board: the role of the technical inspection certificate

Documents and accessories: do not confuse

Documents to present: Driving licence and identity card , the driver Registration certificate , the vehicle Insurance certificate , the only one that can be digital Technical inspection certificate , if the vehicle is subject to it Accessories to have on board (art. 81.2): warning triangle , fire extinguisher , first aid kit , and the reflective vest , which article 51.4 requires to be worn as soon as you exit the vehicle in breakdown on motorway or motor road.

Not to be confused: the certificate of conformity is not a document to carry, it is used for vehicle registration. And a loss certificate does not replace any document: you must obtain a duplicate before returning to the road.

Penalties for failure to carry out technical inspection

Driving a vehicle whose technical inspection certificate is absent, expired or non-compliant constitutes a serious offence . The consequences are severe: substantial fines, vehicle immobilisation, and inability to drive legally.

Regularly check the expiry date of your technical inspection certificate. Plan your inspection well before this date to avoid finding yourself without a valid document. A vehicle without a valid certificate cannot legally drive on public roads.

Police check: presentation of documents

During a police check, you must be able to present all mandatory documents. The qualified officer may ask to see your technical inspection certificate to verify that your vehicle is technically compliant. The absence or expiry of this document constitutes an offence.

Withdrawal, disqualification: who decides?

Two distinct mechanisms, and the exam tests the difference. Immediate withdrawal of the driving licence is a precautionary measure ordered by the Public Prosecutor , or, in cases provided for by law, by the judicial police officer. Disqualification from driving is a penalty , pronounced by the judge . The officer who checks you on the road decides neither one nor the other.

Possible outcomes of the inspection

The technical inspection does not end with simply "passed" or "failed". Depending on the severity of the defects found, the centre issues a certificate of different colour: green when the vehicle is compliant, or a certificate of limited duration requiring repairs to be made and the vehicle to be presented again within the specified period. When the defects are dangerous, the vehicle may be prohibited from driving , except for the journey to the repair location or to the inspection centre. The rule to remember is simple: it is the validity date written on the certificate that is decisive , regardless of its colour. After this date, the vehicle is no longer in compliance.

If the certificate issued to you has a short deadline, treat it as a firm deadline: have repairs made, then present the vehicle before the date written . After this deadline, you are driving without a valid certificate, with the consequences of an offence and the risk of immobilisation.
