How much does a driving licence cost in Belgium?

Home › How much does a driving licence cost in Belgium?

The cost of a Belgian driving licence varies enormously depending on one choice: learning with a guide (the free route) or with a driving school. The fixed fees are modest; driving lessons and failed attempts are what make the bill climb. Here is the budget item by item, with the 2026 fees for each region.

Free route or driving school: the real difference

On the free route, you learn with one or two qualified guides, usually relatives. The main costs are the exam fees, an insured vehicle and fuel. It is by far the cheapest option, provided your guide is genuinely available.

With a driving school, lessons become the main cost: you pay a qualified instructor, a dual-control car and specific insurance. It is more expensive per hour, but often worth it for people with few chances to drive otherwise.

The most expensive item is the one you do not plan

A failed theory test costs a new fee. Two failures cost much more: twelve hours of compulsory theory lessons at an approved driving school before a third attempt, a bill out of all proportion to the test fee.

The maths is simple: one more week of free practice before booking costs nothing and removes the biggest risk. The reliable threshold is three mock exams in a row above 45/50.

Our free theory test uses the same format as the real exam: 50 questions, the same scoring, the same timer.

Taking the test in English costs extra

Candidates who take the theory test in a language other than the region's standard language may pay a supplement: in Flanders, an audio version in French, German or English costs €43 extra; in Brussels, English via an interpreter costs €50 extra. Practise this topic with real exam questions

Reading a rule is not enough: in the Belgian theory exam every question is asked on a photo of a real traffic situation, with answers that look deliberately alike. On PermisBelges, every topic of the highway code is practised with questions in the GOCA exam format, each one corrected and explained.

A free account gives access to the lessons, the free mock exams and progress tracking. Premium unlocks every exam simulation, detailed statistics per topic and targeted revision of your mistakes until exam day.
