What to bring to the Belgian theory test
Home › What to bring to the Belgian theory test
Every week, well-prepared candidates are turned away at the exam centre for a simple reason: a forgotten or expired ID. The fee is then lost. Here is the checklist of what to bring on theory test day, what is not allowed in the exam room and how arrival at the centre works.
Key points
A valid ID
The only essential document: without it you are not admitted and the fee is lost.
Arrive early
Allow at least fifteen minutes for check-in, ID verification and setting up.
Nothing else on the desk
Phones, smartwatches and notes are not allowed during the test.
The checklist
- A valid ID: Belgian ID card, or passport or residence card for foreign candidates. Check the expiry date the day before.
- Your booking confirmation, on paper or on your phone, depending on the centre.
- Your glasses or contact lenses, if you need them to read a screen.
- A means of payment, only if the fee was not paid when booking.
No valid ID, no exam: it is the most common reason for refusal, and the fee is not refunded.
What is not allowed in the exam room
Headphones are usually provided so you can listen to each question being read out. Any attempt to cheat ends the exam and may lead to a ban from retaking it for a period.
- Phones, smartwatches and any electronic device: they stay in a locker or switched off in your bag.
- Notes, books, highway code summaries.
- Talking to other candidates or getting help.
How the day runs
You get your result straight away. If you pass, you can apply for your provisional licence at your municipality. Different documents are needed for the practical test: see the practical driving test.
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| Check-in | ID and booking verification |
| Setting up | Assigned computer, headphones, on-screen instructions |
| Exam | 50 questions, about 15 seconds each |
| Result | Immediately at the end |
The best thing to bring: measured preparation
What you really bring is your level. Before booking, aim for three mock exams in a row above 45/50 under real conditions. Test yourself with the free theory test and practise the hardest questions.
Practise this topic with real exam questions
Reading a rule is not enough: in the Belgian theory exam every question is asked on a photo of a real traffic situation, with answers that look deliberately alike. On PermisBelges, every topic of the highway code is practised with questions in the GOCA exam format, each one corrected and explained.
A free account gives access to the lessons, the free mock exams and progress tracking. Premium unlocks every exam simulation, detailed statistics per topic and targeted revision of your mistakes until exam day.
